How To Make A Hamster Cage Escape Proof

Just like most pets, your hamster has at least tried several times to escape from it's cage. Confining a hamster to its cage can be a challenging task for you. The hamster is a very hyper-active animal in nature, and is always looking for a way out. It will either attempt to chew through the material of the cage or find other means of escaping from its cage.

However, no need to worry, there are several techniques that you can use to make a hamster cage escape proof. The type of technique that you choose to use will depend on the

cage that you have.

The following are some tips that will help you to make your hamster's cage escape proof. The design of the cage matters When choosing a cage for your hamster, you need to put into consideration the design.

Sometimes a cage will fail to secure your hamster simply because the design is not suitable for the type of hamster you have. For example wire mesh cages are not designed for dwarf hamsters, because of their size, they are able to squeeze through the wire mesh and escape.

A cage with wire mesh can be dangerous to the dwarf hamster, because chances are, the hamster will get stuck and choke to death as a result of trying to go through the wire mesh.

Sometimes, a cage simply cannot hold a particular hamster due to it's design. For example, most wire mesh cages are useless at containing dwarf hamsters. Make sure that you look at the cage critically before buying it.

The type of cage that you buy should be reinforced to make it escape proof. How to make the hamster cage escape proof In order to prevent any escape attempts by the hamster, test all the entrance, exit and any open spaces of the cage. If you notice that the lock is loose, then you should consider buying a stronger lock for the exit and entrance and cover all the open spaces with metallic bars.

A hamster will not be able to chew through metal, which will be a big relief for you, if your hamster has tried several times to escape from it's cage. When choosing a lock, a simple combination lock is a good option for easy opening. How to fix the cage If your hamster escaped from it's cage, you should find out how the hamster managed to escape before fixing the cage.

If the problem was a loose door or an open space, then you should consider using a stronger lock and closing all the gaps that are big enough for the hamster to squeeze through. Don't forget that one of the things that hamsters like doing is chewing, that is why it is important that you

remember not to use a material that a hamster can chew through and escape.

If the cage has a bigger problem such as a bent bar then it may be time for you to buy a new cage. In the meantime, you can use a plastic bin as a temporary solution so that your hamster does not escape.

Types of cages that are nearly escape proof If you are using a plastic bin as a temporary solution, make sure that it is well- ventilated. If you are using an aquarium, it can be hard to keep it properly ventilated since it is designed to be completely sealed off.

Another setback in using an aquarium, is the fact that it may trap bad smells and harmful gases that are not good for your hamster. Plastic bins are a much better option than an aquarium.

However, if your hamster chooses to chew through it then the plastic bin will cease to be a better temporal solution for you. If the cage has some open spaces between the bars, then a persistent hamster can easily go through it. The plastic or glass aquariums are suitable for the Syrian or Dwarf hamsters.

Even though the glass is heavy, it is easy to clean and it will prevent the hamster from escaping. You can get a good screen top from any pet store, however a top made out of very strong wire is better to use than a thin screen. If the aquarium has a good top, then it is almost escape proof. The barred cage

The problem with the barred cage, is that it lacks ample space for the hamster to freely move inside the cage. When choosing a barred cage, choose one that has at least three levels where the hamster can freely roam. A custom made cage You can make your own hamster cage so long as you have the right materials and technical know-how.

You can use a combination of hardwood and strong wire to make the cage. However, you have to keep reinforcing the wooden parts with new wood every so often especially if you start seeing signs that indicate that the hamster has been chewing the wood.

You can opt to use a cage using plastic containers with wire covers. The plastic bins are much easier to clean and it will be difficult for the hamster to chew it unless you use very soft plastic material.
